When is coaching and mentorship for content designers useful?

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

You want to help your content designer upskill, but you don’t have any more experienced content designers in your organisation

You have management and mentorship in place, but want a neutral, external professional to support your content designer in their career choices

How does coaching the individual help the business?

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

1-1 coaching can set employees up for success, helping them to realise their full potential within their current role, and as they grow within the organisation.

Through deep personal insight as well as concrete tools and practices such as personal prioritisation and planning, 1-1 coaching can help keep employees grounded and protect them from overwhelm and burnout.

Coaching benefits not only the coachee, but also all those who they interact with on a daily basis. The work we do helps the coachee to better understand themselves and how they interact with others, honing their communication and collaboration skills, and helping them grow into better leaders.

How does it work and what’s included?

The kickoff call

square-icon-ways-of-words

We establish objectives that are in line with both personal and professional priorities, and identify any pain points you would like to address.

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

We define a theme for each session, while allowing flexibility for important subjects or changes of direction that may come up during the process.

The pace

The coachee can book all their sessions in advance to determine the pace, or book sessions one by one and up to a week in advance (subject to my availability), according to the time needed to implement the insights gained

The coaching sessions

With a pre-established theme, each session can be planned. If appropriate, I prepare a workshop or structured discussion, usually laid out on a virtual whiteboard.

I guide the coachee throughout the session, and map out the discussion on the whiteboard. Coachees have immediate access to this board after the session.

The coachee receives a follow-up email within 48 hours after each session, summarising the main points brought up during the session, and with instructions for the experiments or exercises we will have determined during the session.

Supporting materials and roadmap

After the final session, the coachee will receive a deck with supporting materials. These can include various tools they will have experimented with, cheat sheets on particular topics covered, or content that is useful within the context of our work together.

They will also receive a roadmap that is the result of our work together. This covers goals they have set, potential challenges and the steps they will take. All the content here will have been determined by the coachee and is presented in a simple format that they can present to their manager or team if they so desire.

What coaching looks like with me

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

There is no one size fits all in coaching, which is why I prefer to work 1-1, tailoring our sessions to the coachee and allowing enough flexibility to follow up with discoveries that emerge from our sessions.

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

The tools I use will vary with each coachee, according to what works best for them. Since my clients are from the tech space, I often use tools and formats that will be familiar to them — an online whiteboard with post-its, prioritisation exercises and processes that echo design thinking.

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

Along with these, I also integrate techniques that allow us to create a safe space where the coachee can address their emotions and face deeper issues.

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

All my coachees start by defining their core values and we use this as a foundation for the work we do together. At each step of the process, we will check in to make sure that any objectives or exercises we set are aligned with their values. This ensures that the work we do throughout the coaching process is sustainable for the coachee, and that decisions are made in line with their values rather than according to trends or theories.

rond-icon-black-ways-of-words

For me, coaching is about empowering the coachee to find their own solutions and make the right decisions for themselves. The coach is a facilitator who creates the right environment and asks the right questions for the coachee to make progress on this journey.

Who can benefit from it?

Content designers at any level, from junior to principal.

Coaching can help address questions concerning career development, personal development, and work-life balance.

Mentorship accompanies the content designer in problem solving specific tasks and situations. These can be centred on craft, strategy or management, honing their skills with specific examples and exercises.

What is your privacy policy when working with a coachee and a company?

All information shared within the coaching process remains fully confidential — whether that concerns the coachees personal process or company numbers and processes.

When interacting with different individuals from the same organisation, my position is that of facilitator, meaning that only the coachee chooses what they wish to share from their sessions.

This is stipulated in the coaching contract.

Can there be a conflict of interest between your service to the coachee and their employer?

As a coach, my ethical responsibility is always and only towards the coachee. This ensures a safe and confidential environment for the coachee.

How is your offer different to coaching platforms?

Most platforms offer shorter coaching sessions with a generalist coach.

  • My experience in UX and content design provides a very specific expertise for a highly specialised profession. The growth I experienced and accompanied in corporate and with my clients as a consultant reflects that of many companies, allowing me to easily anticipate and understand company and industry level challenges.
  • The blend between classic coaching, design thinking and workshop formats is particularly efficient and effective for my coachees since it helps them feel at home with the tools and formats common in Agile environments.
  • All options include setting initial objectives, accountability during the coaching period, and a detailed follow-up deck that gives the coachee a document they can refer back to and a clear roadmap they can discuss and implement with their manager and/or team.

My coaching experience with Marie-Anne was outstanding and I highly recommend it. Our sessions were never tiring or stressful—they were fun and gave me lots of energy.

Marie-Anne used her curiosity, empathy, experience and knowledge to help me better visualise and articulate my career and personal goals by connecting them with my values. I usually don’t like goal setting exercises but the strategy and framework Marie-Anne uses seem to be made exactly for people like me. None of it felt like a chore; it all felt like a fun discovery of how to take my career to the next level, in a healthy and sustainable way.

What we uncovered during our sessions has already impacted my work life in a very concrete way, and I’m already seeing the benefits of implementing the strategy she walked me through for growing my leadership skills. Again: I cannot recommend Marie-Anne enough!

I can’t recommend professional coaching enough, and Marie-Anne Chaloupecky is a total gem. Every session surprised and energised me, and I use the tools I learned from her almost every week.

Content Ops Manager, previously Content Design Manager at Zalando

My coaching sessions with Marie-Anne benefited me greatly. After each session I felt reassured, calm and motivated. What I love about working with her is that she is both a great listener and has high emotional intelligence.

She accompanied me in better understanding my emotions in order to clarify my needs. I originally came to her seeking better personal organisation, and our sessions really helped me to improve that too. I’m now able to face my daily tasks serenely, and am also better organised more globally, in how I use my work time, how I prioritise and ritualise both my work and personal life. It’s wonderful.
